La grande audition de Leipzig"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#8dcffc42\">Les cantates de Bach ont pris une telle place dans notre panth\u00e9on musical que l\u2019on imaginerait volontiers leur auteur recrut\u00e9 haut la main au poste de cantor \u00e0 la <em>Thomaskirche<\/em> de Leipzig&#8230; C\u2019est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 un peu par hasard, \u00e0 la suite du retrait de deux autres candidats, Telemann et Graupner, que ce poste lui est \u00e9chu en 1723. Les qualit\u00e9s de Telemann et de Graupner, qui avaient v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Leipzig, \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 bien connues des autorit\u00e9s de la ville, tandis que Bach \u00e9tait un relatif <em>outsider<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-200eb286 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Design-sans-titre2-1024x677.jpg ,https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Design-sans-titre2.jpg 780w, https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Design-sans-titre2.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Design-sans-titre2-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-8733\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" title=\"Design sans titre(2)\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-27faa19c\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Composer des cantates \u00e0 Leipzig<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsque Jean-S\u00e9bastien Bach arrive en poste, si la R\u00e9forme luth\u00e9rienne est ancr\u00e9e \u00e0 Leipzig depuis 1539, la cantate n\u2019est chant\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9glise que depuis quarante ans. Le poste auquel Bach est recrut\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0<em>Thomaskantor<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, implique la composition de ces cantates pour chaque dimanche, en \u00e9cho \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9vangile du jour. Le cantor est \u00e9galement en charge de la musique civique, de l\u2019entretien des orgues, et responsable de la formation des choristes de la <em>Thomasschule<\/em>, qui fournissent les principales \u00e9glises de la ville. Il succ\u00e8de \u00e0 Kuhnau, compositeur, \u00e9rudit, linguiste et philosophe, qui exer\u00e7ait la fonction de cantor \u00e0 Leipzig depuis 1701. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bach n\u2019avait jusqu\u2019alors pas \u00e9tudi\u00e9 ou r\u00e9sid\u00e9 \u00e0 Leipzig, contrairement \u00e0 nombre de ses contemporains\u00a0: Leipzig abrite la facult\u00e9 de droit la plus prestigieuse du monde germanique et de nombreux jeunes gens y sont alors form\u00e9s. C\u2019est le cas de Graupner et Telemann, qui rejoignent la ville pour les m\u00eames raisons et y demeurent simultan\u00e9ment entre 1701 et 1706, nouant des liens amicaux et musicaux. Graupner affine son talent de compositeur en \u00e9tudiant avec Kuhnau, tandis que Telemann se montre particuli\u00e8rement entreprenant. Il cr\u00e9e un <em>Collegium musicum<\/em> d\u2019une quarantaine d\u2019\u00e9tudiants, et finit par \u00eatre charg\u00e9 par la municipalit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9crire tous les quinze jours pour la <em>Thomaskirche<\/em> et la <em>Nikolaikirsche, <\/em>rognant ainsi ouvertement sur les pr\u00e9rogatives du cantor en poste. En ao\u00fbt 1704, il devient organiste et directeur musical de la <em>Neukirche<\/em>&#8230; qui relevait jusque-l\u00e0 de la responsabilit\u00e9 du cantor de St Thomas. Du vivant m\u00eame de Kuhnau, le jeune Telemann semble donc avoir joui de la pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence des autorit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-ce0048de wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Thomaskirche_und_Thomasschule_zu_Leipzig.jpeg ,https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Thomaskirche_und_Thomasschule_zu_Leipzig.jpeg 780w, https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Thomaskirche_und_Thomasschule_zu_Leipzig.jpeg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/constanceluzzati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Thomaskirche_und_Thomasschule_zu_Leipzig.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-8721\" width=\"897\" height=\"473\" title=\"Thomaskirche_und_Thomasschule_zu_Leipzig\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-0f6dc3aa\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Un poste tr\u00e8s convoit\u00e9<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Le poste que laisse Kuhnau en 1722 est suffisamment enviable pour que s\u2019y pr\u00e9sentent des musiciens jouissant de belles situations, \u00e0 Hambourg pour Telemann, Darmstadt pour Graupner, et K\u00f6then pour Bach. L\u2019\u00e9lection du successeur du cantor dure presque un an, et se d\u00e9roule en plusieurs feuilletons \u00e0 rebondissements. \u00c0 la suite de la mort de Kuhnau le 5 juin 1722, six musiciens se pr\u00e9sentent, dont Bach et Graupner ne font pas partie. Telemann en revanche postule, probablement agac\u00e9 par quelques noises hambourgeoises\u00a0: l\u2019imprimeur de la ville lui conteste le droit d\u2019imprimer \u00e0 son profit sa Passion annuelle et certains repr\u00e9sentants de l\u2019\u00e9glise n\u2019acceptent pas qu\u2019il ait pris la direction de l\u2019op\u00e9ra et de concerts publics. Il est \u00e9lu \u00e0 l\u2019unanimit\u00e9 par le conseil municipal de Leipzig en ao\u00fbt&#8230; mais apr\u00e8s l\u2019obtention d\u2019une augmentation de salaire substantielle \u00e0 Hambourg, il d\u00e9cline le poste de Leipzig en novembre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bach\u00a0: La Grande Audition par Paul Agnew \u00e0 Ambronay\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oMSNHSgB6I4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> La ville lance alors une seconde commission de recrutement, \u00e0 laquelle r\u00e9pondent trois des six candidats pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, rejoints par Bach et Graupner, dont les cantates sont auditionn\u00e9es d\u00e9but 1723. Graupner fait entendre <em>Aus der Tiefen rufen wir<\/em> le 17 janvier et Bach <em>Jesus nahm zu sich die Zw\u00f6lfe<\/em> et <em>Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn<\/em> le 7 f\u00e9vrier. Graupner, d\u00e9j\u00e0 appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par la municipalit\u00e9, est choisi&#8230; mais se retire en mars pour les m\u00eames raisons que Telemann\u00a0: Darmstadt pr\u00e9f\u00e8re l\u2019augmenter que le voir partir. Bach, qui n\u2019est pas inconnu car il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 par Kuhnau \u00e0 la Pentec\u00f4te 1721, est finalement recrut\u00e9 en avril, et s\u2019installe \u00e0 Leipzig \u00e0 la fin du mois de mai. Plus de onze mois et deux faux espoirs apr\u00e8s la mort de Kuhnau, la ville dispose d\u2019un nouveau cantor, l\u2019\u00e9glise une cantate (BWV 75) inaugurale, et les \u00e9l\u00e8ves de Saint-Thomas un directeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-7c1feb37\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Visages de la cantate<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>La cantate est un genre prot\u00e9iforme&nbsp;: l\u2019ouverture, le ch\u0153ur, l\u2019alternance de r\u00e9cits et airs, puis le choral final que l\u2019on entend le plus souvent chez Bach sont loin d\u2019\u00eatre un mod\u00e8le unique. Leipzig aurait entendu des cantates bien diff\u00e9rentes si Graupner avait finalement pris le poste&nbsp;! Quant \u00e0 Kuhnau qui l\u2019a pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9, c\u2019est de loin le plus op\u00e9ratique, italianisant et volubile&#8230; paradoxalement plus que Telemann, contre lequel il avait protest\u00e9, craignant l\u2019introduction par les \u00e9tudiants d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments op\u00e9ratiques dans la musique d\u2019\u00e9glise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La structure et l\u2019instrumentation pr\u00e9sentent des aspects diff\u00e9rents, \u00e0 l\u2019exception de la pr\u00e9sence du hautbois soliste, exploit\u00e9 avec finesse et mis en avant par trois des quatre compositeurs&nbsp;: Kuhnau l\u2019entrelace avec les voix, le traitant \u00e0 \u00e9galit\u00e9 avec celles-ci, de m\u00eame que Bach qui lui offre des lignes d\u2019une rare souplesse, dans ses ouvertures comme dans les airs, tandis que Graupner lui fait d\u00e9buter <em>Aus der Tiefen rufen wir<\/em> par un r\u00e9cit instrumental d\u00e9clamatif riche en surprises harmoniques. Le ch\u0153ur est utilis\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re diverse mais toujours tr\u00e8s riche&nbsp;: on pourrait presque parler de psalmodie chorale chez Graupner tant le texte est d\u00e9clam\u00e9&nbsp;; le texte est \u00e9galement dessin\u00e9, presque d\u00e9coup\u00e9, avec force et pr\u00e9cision dans l\u2019exorde de Telemann et dans la cantate BWV 22.
