La question de la ma\u00eetrise des passions et des choix corn\u00e9liens qu\u2019elle induit est pourtant centrale, tant au sein des \u0153uvres de Haendel qui remaniera deux fois ce premier et dernier oratorio (<em>The Triumph of Time and Truth<\/em>, 1757), que parmi la production dramatique italienne de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Elle est au c\u0153ur de tous les op\u00e9ras de ce d\u00e9but de XVIII<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle qui, \u00e0 travers une intrigue \u00e0 rebondissements amoureux et guerriers, s\u2019interrogent sur le sens de l\u2019existence et pr\u00f4nent la maitrise de soi. L\u2019op\u00e9ra que le jeune compositeur \u00e9crit en cette m\u00eame ann\u00e9e 1707 n\u2019y d\u00e9roge pas. Bien qu\u2019on le connaisse davantage sous le nom de son personnage principal,&nbsp;<em>Rodrigo<\/em>, le titre original \u00e9tait plus explicite&nbsp;:&nbsp;<em>Vincer se stesso \u00e8 la maggior vittoria (Se vaincre soi-m\u00eame est la plus grande victoire).&nbsp;<\/em>Le sujet est donc bien dans l\u2019air du temps, et permet par ailleurs \u00e0 Haendel d\u2019exposer au public romain pour lequel il \u00e9crit toute l\u2019\u00e9tendue de ses talents de compositeur et d\u2019organiste.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fra\u00eechement arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Rome en 1707, son extraordinaire virtuosit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019orgue lui ouvre les portes des m\u00e9c\u00e8nes et esth\u00e8tes les plus importants de la ville. Haendel parvient \u00e0 entrer dans les bonnes gr\u00e2ces des plus puissants d\u2019entre eux, tels le marquis Francesco Maria Ruspoli, le cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, et surtout le cardinal Benedetto Pamphili, descendant des Borghese et petit-neveu du pape Innocent X, propri\u00e9taire d\u2019un palais somptueux o\u00f9 il fait repr\u00e9senter des spectacles musicaux interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par les meilleurs musiciens de la ville. Ces hommes de pouvoir, fins lettr\u00e9s, th\u00e9ologiens, philosophes, m\u00e9lomanes, sont pour la plupart d\u2019entre eux membres de l\u2019acad\u00e9mie de l\u2019Arcadie, laquelle s\u2019\u00e9tait attach\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin du si\u00e8cle pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent \u00e0 red\u00e9finir les lignes directrices des textes d\u2019op\u00e9ra italien, \u00e9pur\u00e9s et rationalis\u00e9s. Le pape avait eu beau promulguer l\u2019interdiction de repr\u00e9senter des op\u00e9ras \u00e0 Rome, les arcadiens, m\u00eame cardinaux, n\u2019avaient pas cess\u00e9 de s\u2019int\u00e9resser au genre dramatique profane. Ils ne pouvaient toutefois pas ouvertement en \u00eatre librettistes ou commanditaires, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence des cantates, oratorios et motets, sur lesquels ils report\u00e8rent leurs vell\u00e9it\u00e9s cr\u00e9atrices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background\" style=\"color:#371801;background-color:#faeee0\"><strong>Plaisir et S\u00e9ductions musicales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le jeune Haendel a ainsi profit\u00e9 des talents litt\u00e9raires et de la protection du cardinal Pamphili, auteur de 88 livrets de cantates et de plusieurs livrets d\u2019oratorio, o\u00f9 luttent et triomphent les forces c\u00e9lestes sur les attractions terrestres, comme dans le&nbsp;<em>Trionfo della gratia<\/em>&nbsp;mis en musique quelques ann\u00e9es plus t\u00f4t par Alessandro Scarlatti. Le nombre important des instrumentistes et l\u2019excellence de ceux qu\u2019il emploie, le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre et co\u00fbteux Corelli en t\u00eate, t\u00e9moignent d\u2019un go\u00fbt r\u00e9el pour des ex\u00e9cutions d\u2019une qualit\u00e9 hors du commun. Organiste hors pair, Haendel est probablement au clavier pour l\u2019ex\u00e9cution de son oratorio, il s\u2019est taill\u00e9 une partie concertante sur mesure dans la sonate qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de&nbsp;\u00ab&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vGkPENmA2jw\">un leggiadro giovinetto<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb. La v\u00e9locit\u00e9 du clavier y est mise en avant, mais aussi celle des cordes qui dialoguent avec celui-ci&nbsp;: la partie est p\u00e9rilleuse et flatteuse pour tous.&nbsp;<em>Piacere<\/em>&nbsp;tente ainsi&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>&nbsp;par la vue d\u2019un gracieux jeune homme et l\u2019\u00e9coute des sons harmonieux qui, \u00e0 d\u00e9faut d\u2019emporter le choix de&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>, s\u00e9duisent avec succ\u00e8s l\u2019oreille du spectateur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Un pensiero nemico di pace - Sabine Devieilhe (HD)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CctJSXUrdwk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Si la th\u00e9matique de l\u2019oratorio, ainsi que la mani\u00e8re dont celle-ci est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e, r\u00e9solue et mise en musique sont caract\u00e9ristiques de la Rome du XVIII<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle, le sujet concerne la condition humaine&nbsp;et n\u2019a rien perdu de son actualit\u00e9&nbsp;: tout spectateur peut se projeter sur&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>, all\u00e9gorie de la jeunesse, confront\u00e9e \u00e0 la prise de conscience terrifiante de sa propre finitude. D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but,&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>&nbsp;fr\u00e9mit d\u2019une inqui\u00e9tude impalpable, malgr\u00e9 l\u2019image rassurante que lui renvoie le miroir. Elle se jette dans les bras de&nbsp;<em>Piacere<\/em>&nbsp;auquel elle jure fid\u00e9lit\u00e9, comme pour conjurer ce pressentiment.&nbsp;<em>Piacere<\/em> d\u00e9ploie toute l\u2019\u00e9tendue de ses s\u00e9ductions sonores pour la retenir, \u00e0 travers son agilit\u00e9 vocale, la v\u00e9locit\u00e9 de l\u2019orgue et celle du violon, mais aussi par la ligne \u00e9pur\u00e9e de l\u2019air qui enjoint Beaut\u00e9 de cueillir la rose sans approcher l\u2019\u00e9pine, \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Lascia la spina<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, que l\u2019op\u00e9ra&nbsp;<em>Rinaldo<\/em>&nbsp;reprendra et rendra c\u00e9l\u00e8bre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"G. Dans la version anglaise plus tardive, le compositeur remplacera d\u2019ailleurs&nbsp;<em>Desillusion<\/em>&nbsp;par&nbsp;<em>Truth<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/em>). Son premier air est frappant, sur une basse chromatique descendante, inlassablement r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e par l\u2019orgue. La tonalit\u00e9 de&nbsp;<em>fa<\/em>&nbsp;mineur est inhabituelle, les notes r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es sont martel\u00e9es, les grands intervalles de la voix presque durs, d\u00e9charn\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019image de ce que le texte \u00e9voque. \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Credi l\u2019uom qu\u2019egli risposi<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb pr\u00e9sente une autre facette de&nbsp;<em>Tempo<\/em>, qui agit imperceptiblement. La longue premi\u00e8re partie figure parfaitement le texte, en \u00e9tirant au maximum deux petits vers sur une douce orchestration de fl\u00fbtes \u00e0 bec&nbsp;: tandis que l\u2019homme croit qu\u2019il se repose, le temps d\u00e9ploie en secret ses ailes sur de longues vocalises. Les deux vers suivants brisent violemment l\u2019illusion en changeant la prosodie, la vocalit\u00e9, l\u2019orchestration, pour reprendre presque imm\u00e9diatement la berceuse trompeuse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background\" style=\"color:#371801;background-color:#faeee0\"><strong>Beaut\u00e9 hors du Temps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paradoxalement,&nbsp;<em>Disinganno<\/em>&nbsp;accompagne&nbsp;<em>Tempo<\/em>&#8230; pour mieux convaincre&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>&nbsp;que la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, si elle passe par l\u2019acceptation du temps, se situe hors de celui-ci&nbsp;: l\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9 n\u2019est pas une modalit\u00e9 particuli\u00e8re du temps, elle en est la n\u00e9gation m\u00eame. Pamphili n\u2019aurait peut-\u00eatre pas agr\u00e9\u00e9 le syllogisme, mais si le temps s\u2019oppose au plaisir, et que l\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9 est le contraire du temps, alors plaisir et \u00e9ternit\u00e9 se rejoignent-ils peut-\u00eatre. C\u2019est en tous les cas le paradoxe qu\u2019Haendel donne \u00e0 entendre au spectateur, qui ne peut que se r\u00e9jouir infiniment de la beaut\u00e9 engendr\u00e9e par le renoncement de&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>, dont les airs s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8vent sur des courbes m\u00e9lodiques de plus en plus \u00e9pur\u00e9es \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019oratorio approche de son d\u00e9nouement. Chacun des grands intervalles qui se succ\u00e8dent dans la ligne de chant de \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Tu del ciel ministro eletto<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, le dernier air de&nbsp;<em>Bellezza<\/em>, ouvre un peu plus l\u2019espace int\u00e9rieur de l\u2019auditeur \u00e0 une beaut\u00e9 qui, dilatant le temps, touche au sublime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube
