Bach qui jamais ne s\u2019aventura hors des territoires germaniques, Haendel tenta sa fortune en Europe :&nbsp;<em>il Caro Sassone<\/em>&nbsp;(le cher Saxon) en Italie, puis George Frideric Handel, sujet anglais. Le livre biblique d\u2019<em>Esther<\/em>, point de d\u00e9part, par une suite de hasards, de son premier oratorio anglais, est en un sens tout aussi cosmopolite. Il raconte, en h\u00e9breu mais \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re grecque, l\u2019histoire d\u2019une juive en Perse<sup>1<\/sup>. Il est en cela simplement bien de son temps&nbsp;: on ne compte plus les&nbsp;<em>Serse<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Artaserse<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Mitridate<\/em>&nbsp;et&nbsp;<em>Semiramide<\/em>&nbsp;qui envahissent les sc\u00e8nes d\u2019op\u00e9ra au XVIII<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VINCI: Artaserse - Opera of the Year - MEZZO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ULTP8fkgKGE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"background-color:#fee27c\"><strong>Ambigu\u00eft\u00e9s de genre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le sujet de l\u2019\u0153uvre ne justifie pas, \u00e0 lui seul, d\u2019en faire un oratorio plut\u00f4t qu\u2019un op\u00e9ra. L\u2019utilisation de la langue anglaise la sort du moule de l\u2019<em>opera seria<\/em>. La premi\u00e8re version de l\u2019\u0153uvre, intitul\u00e9e en 1720&nbsp;<em>Haman and Mordecai<\/em>&nbsp;\u00e9tait un masque, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre anglaise en musique. Pourquoi, cette fois-ci, le compositeur la titre-t-il \u00ab&nbsp;oratorio&nbsp;\u00bb&nbsp;? L\u2019interdiction de l\u2019\u00e9v\u00eaque de Londres de faire repr\u00e9senter sc\u00e9niquement l\u2019\u0153uvre fait pencher la balance de ce c\u00f4t\u00e9 ; le succ\u00e8s de son audition fera le reste et actera la naissance de l\u2019oratorio anglais.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e1e1e1\">\u00ab\u00a0<em>Dr Gibson, then Bishop&nbsp;of&nbsp;London,&nbsp;would&nbsp;not grant Permission&nbsp;for its&nbsp;being represented on that Stage [i.e&nbsp;Opera-house&nbsp;in the Hay-Market], even with Books in the Children&rsquo;s&nbsp;Hands.&nbsp;Mr&nbsp;Handel&nbsp;. . .&nbsp;had&nbsp;it&nbsp;performed&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Theatre&nbsp;. . .&nbsp;but in Still&nbsp;Life.<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb Charles Burney<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"background-color:#fee27c\"><strong>Un texte pas si sacr\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019histoire d\u2019Esther est peut-\u00eatre, avec celle de Joseph, l\u2019une des moins religieuses de la Bible. Dans la version h\u00e9bra\u00efque du texte, Dieu est \u00e0 peine \u00e9voqu\u00e9. Luth\u00e9rien de naissance, il s\u2019est gliss\u00e9 dans la peau des musiques r\u00e9form\u00e9es, catholiques et anglicanes avec la plus grande facilit\u00e9. Le livre d\u2019Esther est th\u00e9ologiquement sans risque, mais politiquement corrosif, permettant \u00e0 toute minorit\u00e9 opprim\u00e9e de s\u2019y projeter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"background-color:#fee27c\"><strong>Pluralit\u00e9 esth\u00e9tique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La musique ne rel\u00e8ve pas davantage d\u2019une esth\u00e9tique sp\u00e9cifiquement sacr\u00e9e. Ainsi, l\u2019air \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Praise the lord&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb reprend tous les codes des airs d\u2019op\u00e9ra&nbsp;: il en \u00e9pouse la grande virtuosit\u00e9, les ritournelles instrumentales, la forme \u2013 l\u2019<em>aria da capo<\/em>, o\u00f9 la premi\u00e8re partie est enti\u00e8rement reprise \u00e0 la fin afin que le chanteur puisse l\u2019orner et faire montre de toute son agilit\u00e9 \u2013, et il innove avec une harpe soliste v\u00e9loce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Handel: Esther, HWV 50 \/ Scene 2 - &quot;Praise the Lord with cheerful noise&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iyt47u3GH6E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> Les r\u00e9citatifs, moments de musique o\u00f9 le chant se fait moins m\u00e9lodique et prend les inflexions de la voix parl\u00e9e, ne rel\u00e8vent pas d\u2019une narration comme dans les oratorios italiens (le&nbsp;<em>testo<\/em>), latins (l\u2019<em>historicus<\/em>) ou dans les Passions allemandes (l\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9liste), mais sont des moments qui font avancer l\u2019action comme dans les op\u00e9ras. Le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 est si commun qu\u2019il ne faudrait pas vouloir en tordre le sens en y recherchant une intertextualit\u00e9.
